In February 1872, college students star in a curious incident with the cadets of the Academy of Cavalry. Everything starts with a trivial fact, a student and a cadet seek the love of a lady Valladolid. And both earn it instead of attempting respectively, decided to remove the opponent not in very good shape. The fact trivial increases as a ball of love. Pointillism, an exaggerated esprit de corps and "honor" takes cadets to haul dangerous and disproportionate: chase on horseback and sword in hand to students around the Campo Grande (8 February). The faculty supports students and auditing the activities of the cadets, which may well lead to disasters. Colonel-Director (Gabriel Baldrich) takes the side of his house and sent the City a written very undiplomatic, granted that the cadets were right, and if the civilian authorities were holding his own, he would agree that the military element take justice into their own hands. The City Council finds it intolerable that attitude and calls on the government of General Baldrich separation. Councilman Eladio Quintero (D) is outraged, zealous defender of the civil sphere. Gov. Pedro Ollero Cánovas is certainly much more conciliatory and also the academic authorities. In the end everything is solved with a few drinks and shared sweets. We do not know is whether the two gallants the sake of harmony and leaving the game at tables voluntarily waived the hand of Dona Leonor (as they say)
The very fact may be just an anecdote, but not the implications. Practically the whole city takes part. The bulk of the press, except "The Museum" for personal reasons in favor of the university. A wave of anti-militarism through the city (the subject of the fifth is still pending and concern: the war in Cuba is demanding fifth since October 1868).
